Product Language Manager, Japanese

Tokyo, Japan

Netflix is one of the world’s leading entertainment services, with over 300 million paid memberships in over 190 countries enjoying TV series, films and games across a wide variety of genres and languages. Members can play, pause and resume watching as much as they want, anytime, anywhere, and can change their plans at any time.

The Globalization team, an organization within Content Platform, Operations, and Publishing (CPOP), is responsible for translation and cultural adaptation of most things Netflix creates, from beautiful user interfaces to discovery of cinematic original programming and Games. We treat each country we operate in differently, since it is not just about translation: it is about providing our audience with an experience that feels local — and we do it at scale.

We are looking for a Product Language Manager, Japanese who will sit at the intersection of linguistic craft, cultural expertise, product knowledge and AI innovation. You will ensure that our language experiences not only meet the highest standards of accuracy and cultural relevance but also scale through the adoption of advanced AI models and automation. This role requires both the rigor of a linguistic expert and the curiosity of a technologist: someone who can safeguard the craft while leading the transformation of how we build language at scale. This role is focused on Netflix’s members’ experience on our Product so a change mindset, ability to pivot and a willingness to lean into risk will be key to your success.

Core Responsibilities

  • Safeguard and elevate the linguistic member experience by maintaining excellence, ensuring translation quality, cultural resonance, and stylistic alignment with Netflix’ brand voice in your language and market.
  • Develop standards and guardrails by creating and evolving linguistic guidelines, glossaries, terminology guides, in-market sensitivities and quality frameworks that govern AI-assisted localization, and adapt to the evolving business needs and content offering.
  • Support the adoption and optimization of AI-driven tools and LLMs to enhance localization workflows and improve overall efficiency and consistency.
  • Be the human in the loop for the systems and frameworks that require human creativity for AI outputs without compromising quality.
  • Monitor the linguistic quality output of your language by consulting on our internal MQM-based models and other internal quality metrics and KPIs, and providing feedback and context to the translation teams.
  • Act as a cultural ambassador by advocating for market-specific nuances and ensuring our Product resonates authentically with local members.
  • Lead change and innovation by partnering with product, engineering, and AI teams to pilot tools, experiment with automation, and scale successful solutions.

Role Requirements

  • Proven expertise in linguistics, translation, or localization, with deep knowledge of cultural contexts for your market(s).
  • Experience with AI, MT or LLM based technologies: hands-on use, evaluation, or deployment.
  • Openness to adopting new tools that elevate craft at scale.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into practical workflows for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong background in quality frameworks: terminology, glossaries, style guides, and enterprise translation standards.
  • Innovative mindset, with a track record of piloting and scaling new tools or processes.
  • Experience working on product features, UI, and UX, ensuring that language and design choices enhance usability and user experience.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to advocate for both craft and scale.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of Games is a plus.

Inclusion is a Netflix value and we strive to host a meaningful interview experience for all candidates. If you want an accommodation/adjustment for a disability or any other reason during the hiring process, please send a request to your recruiting partner. We are an equal-opportunity employer and celebrate diversity, recognizing that diversity builds stronger teams. We approach diversity and inclusion seriously and thoughtfully. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, ancestry, national origin, caste, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, age, disability, medical condition, pregnancy, genetic makeup, marital status, or military service.
