12 Month Contract to hire, Career Growth for Leadership in the Future!
Job Description
The Automation Designer applies strong mechanical design and drafting expertise to develop custom automated machinery and equipment for a variety of manufacturing applications. This role creates detailed 3D models and drawings, develops concepts from initial idea through to completed designs, and ensures that all solutions meet quality, safety, and performance standards. The position offers the opportunity to grow into a lead role over time while working closely with a tenured team of automation designers.
Responsibilities
- Create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings of custom automated machinery and equipment using specialized CAD software such as KeyCreator, SolidWorks, and UG.
- Develop design concepts, structures, and plant arrangements from the initial conception phase through to finalized designs for manufacturing applications.
- Research and evaluate new materials, components, and development methods to improve equipment performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Collect, read, interpret, and apply reference documents and drawings prepared by other engineering disciplines, vendors, and external partners.
- Ensure all designs comply with approved design standards to deliver high-quality solutions that meet requirements for safety, constructability, reliable operation, cost efficiency, and ease of operation.
- Review and check calculations, design models, drawings, and related design documents for accuracy, completeness, functionality, and professional presentation.
- Assist in assembling bid, approval, and construction-issue drawing packages to support quoting and project execution activities.
- Organize, update, and maintain existing engineering records, drawings, and documentation to ensure accurate and accessible project information.
- Perform physical testing on engineering prototypes to validate design assumptions, identify improvements, and support design refinement.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary project team to integrate mechanical designs with other engineering disciplines for turnkey automation solutions.
- Design custom solutions tailored to client needs, focusing on original designs rather than relying on templates.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement and growth of the automation department and support future leadership responsibilities as the team expands.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical design for custom automation in manufacturing environments.
- Proven experience designing custom automation solutions from the conception phase for clients, rather than working solely from templates.
- Hands-on experience with SolidWorks for 3D modeling and detailed mechanical design.
- Proficiency in reading, interpreting, and producing engineering drawings and documentation.
- Ability to work effectively on multidisciplinary projects and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and external partners.
- Strong understanding of machine design principles for custom machinery, tooling, weld cells, and industrial equipment.
- Capability to perform thorough design reviews, including checking calculations, models, and drawings for accuracy and functionality.
- Experience performing or supporting physical testing of engineering prototypes.
- Strong organizational skills to manage and maintain engineering records and drawing packages.
