Designer
This role focuses on engineering design, 3D modeling, and drafting across all stages of engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning projects within an advanced manufacturing environment. The designer develops detailed technical documentation, supports manufacturing activities directly, and collaborates closely with project management to prioritize work and maintain high-quality design deliverables. This position plays a key role in transforming concepts into manufacturable engineered systems for complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical applications.
Responsibilities
- Perform engineering design, 3D modeling, and drafting for all stages of engineering, procurement, construction, installation, and commissioning projects in an advanced manufacturing setting.
- Develop and update process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), general arrangement drawings, assembly drawings, and detailed fabrication drawings.
- Provide direct engineering support to manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with production capabilities.
- Apply design-for-manufacturing principles to optimize components and systems for machining, fabrication, assembly, and testing.
- Create and maintain engineering design deliverables, including drawings, models, specifications, and related technical documentation, in accordance with standard processes.
- Prepare and maintain operations and maintenance manuals, testing procedures, and inspection reports to support system installation, commissioning, and long-term operation.
- Use parametric modeling software and data management tools to create, revise, and control engineering models and drawings.
- Incorporate Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) into design and drafting to ensure accurate machining and quality control.
- Collaborate with project management to understand priorities, schedule requirements, and scope, and adjust workload accordingly.
- Multi-task effectively across multiple projects and set priorities based on project management direction and changing project needs.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, manufacturing, and testing personnel, to resolve design issues and support successful Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).
Essential Skills
- 3+ years of experience with system design and operation, including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- 3+ years of experience with design for manufacturing in an advanced or industrial manufacturing environment.
- 3+ years of experience with design and drafting for machining using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Proficiency in 3D parametric modeling software, with Autodesk Inventor preferred.
- Experience using data management software, with Autodesk Vault preferred.
- Hands-on experience with Inventor and SolidWorks for 3D modeling and CAD design.
- Strong skills in mechanical and piping design, including layout and detailing.
- Experience with structural steel design for industrial or manufacturing applications.
- Ability to develop P&ID diagrams, general arrangement drawings, assembly drawings, and detailed fabrication drawings.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and set priorities based on project management direction.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in engineering documentation and drawing standards.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- A.S. degree or equivalent industry experience in a mechanical discipline; relevant years of experience may offset formal education requirements.
- Familiarity with advanced manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacture principles.
- Comfort working with cross-functional teams that include engineering, manufacturing, testing, and operations.
- Strong written documentation skills for creating manuals, reports, and technical deliverables.
- Ability to follow and contribute to standardized engineering processes and documentation practices.
Work Environment
The role is based in an advanced manufacturing facility that applies cutting-edge manufacturing techniques to co-create engineered systems for aerospace, specialty casting and forging, environmental, and automation applications. Concept tests and live simulations are conducted on-site, including Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), within a 100,000 sq ft facility. The work environment is highly technical and collaborative, with frequent interaction between design, engineering, and manufacturing teams. You will regularly use modern parametric modeling tools, CAD software, and data management systems in a professional engineering office setting integrated with a production and test facility.
