Distribution Designer
We are currently seeking an experienced Distribution Designer to join our team in North Carolina. The successful candidate will support power distribution infrastructure upgrades and storm hardening projects across the state. This role involves engineering calculations and design tasks, including replacing deteriorating cables, transitioning overhead lines to underground, reconductoring existing distribution lines, and replacing aging poles.
Responsibilities
- Conduct engineering calculations for structural analysis of poles, guying, cable pulling, electric demand, fault currents, and coordination of protective devices.
- Design and implement upgrades for power distribution infrastructure.
- Collaborate with project teams to move overhead lines underground.
- Reconduct existing distribution lines and replace aging poles.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of 2 years of electric utility distribution design experience.
- Proficiency with distribution design software such as BOUD, Maximo, Smallworld, Bentley Open Utility Designer, and Microstation.
- Working knowledge of primary and secondary distribution systems and utility standards.
- Ability to research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and make sound recommendations.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Preferably 2+ years of current or recent experience with the Duke system.
- Experience interacting with customers and developers for distribution projects.
- EIT certification or having passed the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
Work Environment
The role is based near downtown with easy access. The power group consists of 40 people within an office of over 100. The office has recently moved to a new, beautiful location. The Raleigh office includes three asset teams, a relocation team, and a lighting team. A hybrid work schedule is available after 1-3 months, allowing for work from home on Mondays and Fridays.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.
