Distribution Designer

We're seeking a Distribution Designer to join our growing utility engineering team. In this role, you'll design and support electric utility infrastructure that keeps communities powered—working on distribution, transmission, and substation projects from concept through construction. What You'll Do
As a Distribution Designer, you'll play a key role in delivering safe, reliable, and cost‑effective electrical infrastructure.
- Create high‑quality manual and computer‑assisted design and construction drawings with a strong focus on accuracy and constructability
- Apply industry standards, company design practices, and engineering specifications to complex utility design work
- Support the preparation of cost estimates, specifications, material requisitions, and technical documentation
- Assist with engineering calculations and technical evaluations that inform sound design decisions
- Coordinate design activities and equipment deliveries to support project schedules and milestones
- Collect and interpret on‑site field data, including measurements and existing conditions
- Collaborate closely with engineers, field crews, and other stakeholders to resolve design issues
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and quality standards
- Take ownership of assigned work while demonstrating leadership and accountability appropriate to your level
What You Bring
You bring a strong technical foundation, curiosity, and confidence working independently while staying connected to a team.
- Solid knowledge of technical practices in one or more areas:
- Distribution or transmission design
- Substation design
- Electrical, civil, or mechanical engineering
- Protective relaying, I&C, surveying
- GIS, mapping, and CADD
- Proficiency with CAD/CADD tools and experience producing construction drawings
- Experience working from drawings, specifications, and engineering standards
- Familiarity with GIS and mapping tools related to utility or infrastructure projects
- Ability to gather and apply field data to support accurate designs
- Strong organizational, communication, and time‑management skills
- Comfort managing multiple tasks with minimal supervision
Qualifications (Flexible by Level)
We'll consider candidates for the appropriate designer level based on experience and demonstrated capability.
Distribution Designer – Associate
- 2+ years of relevant experience or
- Associate degree (or equivalent) in a technical field preferred
Distribution Designer II
- 5+ years of relevant experience
- At least 1 year of successful experience as a Designer I / Associate Designer
- Associate degree (or equivalent) in a technical field preferred
Relevant experience may include drafting, field engineering, GIS, distribution or transmission design, substation design, civil or mechanical design, surveying, protective relaying, or instrumentation and controls.
Work Environment & Flexibility
- Primarily office‑based using modern engineering design tools (CAD/CADD, GIS)
- Flexible work hours available after training, based on business needs
- Hybrid work option: up to 2 days per week remote after training, depending on performance
- Occasional field site visits to support design accuracy and construction readiness
