Distribution Line Designer
This role supports electric distribution projects for regional electric membership cooperatives and utility partners by combining field data collection with office-based design work. The Distribution Line Designer contributes across the full project lifecycle, from field staking and route layout through design package development and post-construction inspection. The position offers a hybrid work model with roughly equal time spent in the field and in the office.
Responsibilities
- Perform field data collection and staking activities for electric distribution projects, including gathering measurements, documenting existing conditions, and identifying optimal line routes.
- Develop detailed electric distribution line designs using AutoCAD and/or GIS software, ensuring accuracy, constructability, and compliance with design standards.
- Create, organize, and update complete design packages for construction release, including drawings, staking sheets, and supporting documentation.
- Coordinate closely with internal teams and electric membership cooperatives or utility partners to clarify design requirements, incorporate feedback, and resolve technical questions.
- Conduct post-work inspections and verification after construction to confirm that installations match the issued designs and to document any field changes.
- Maintain accurate design records, documentation, and data within CAD, GIS, and project tracking systems.
- Support joint use and utility pole design activities as needed, including reviewing attachments and clearances.
- Collaborate with project stakeholders to support schedule commitments and ensure high-quality deliverables throughout the design lifecycle.
Essential Skills
- 2-year technical degree in GIS, Geospatial, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Ability to work effectively in both field and office environments, including outdoor conditions and typical office settings.
- Experience using CAD and/or GIS software, with proficiency in AutoCAD strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with GIS tools such as ArcGIS for mapping and spatial data management.
- Hands-on experience with electric distribution line design or closely related utility design work.
- Previous field experience supporting power distribution, utility pole, or line design activities.
- Strong attention to detail for developing accurate distribution design and staking packages.
- Ability to maintain organized documentation and design records throughout the project lifecycle.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in electric distribution design or related utility work.
- Prior experience with staking and line design responsibilities for distribution systems.
- Experience supporting electric membership cooperatives, local co-ops, or similar utility partners.
- Experience in distribution design engineering, including joint use and utility pole design considerations.
- Familiarity with power distribution systems, standards, and typical construction practices.
- Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to meet project requirements.
- Comfort with hybrid work that requires frequent transitions between office and field tasks.
Work Environment
- This position follows a hybrid work schedule with approximately 50% of the time spent in the field and 50% in the office.
- Office-based work is performed out of the Villa Rica office, where the designer uses tools such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, and other CAD/GIS platforms to develop and maintain distribution designs.
- Field work involves traveling to project sites to collect data, perform staking, and conduct post-construction inspections, typically within a regional service area.
- Occasional travel may be required, but overnight travel is rare. Mileage reimbursement is provided initially for field travel, with the potential for a company vehicle after approximately six months.
- The role requires appropriate attire for both office and field environments, including clothing suitable for outdoor conditions and safe movement around utility infrastructure.
