Electrical Designer

The Electrical Designer revises cab and chassis wire harness designs to meet customer specifications and change requests. This role focuses on converting existing 3D wire harness designs into precise 2D drawings using AutoCAD, ensuring accuracy, manufacturability, and on-time delivery. The position is primarily desk-based within an engineering environment, with regular collaboration with the shop floor to verify fit, function, and resolve any design issues.

Responsibilities

  • Revise released cab and chassis wire harness designs to align with customer specifications and change requests.
  • Convert existing 3D wire harness designs into accurate 2D drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Create and update electrical schematics and harness layouts to support production and engineering requirements.
  • Ensure all designs meet internal standards for accuracy, quality, and documentation.
  • Adhere to project timelines and deliver design updates and drawings on schedule.
  • Collaborate closely with shop floor personnel to validate design fit and function on actual equipment.
  • Troubleshoot design-related issues identified during build or test and implement corrective design changes.
  • Communicate effectively with other engineers and functional leads to clarify requirements and resolve technical questions.
  • Participate in design reviews and incorporate feedback into updated drawings and documentation.
  • Maintain organized design files and records to support traceability and future design revisions.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on electrical design experience with a focus on products rather than buildings, utilities, or facilities.
  • Experience with wire harness or electrical harness design using any 2D design software.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for creating and revising 2D electrical drawings and harness prints.
  • Ability to interpret and produce electrical schematics and harness layouts.
  • Ability to manage workload to meet strict project deadlines and on-time delivery requirements.
  • Problem-solving skills to troubleshoot design issues and implement effective design changes.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience designing electrical components in SolidWorks.
  • Experience working on cab and chassis or similar vehicle-based electrical systems.
  • Experience collaborating within a multi-engineer project team.

Work Environment

This role is based in an engineering building within a larger manufacturing operation that produces custom fire apparatus, heavy truck chassis, custom vehicles, and truck bodies. The Electrical Designer works primarily at a desk in a cubicle setting, using AutoCAD and other design tools, and collaborates closely with a team of approximately 10 engineers. The position requires periodic visits to the shop floor to review builds, verify that wire harness designs fit and function correctly, and troubleshoot any issues alongside production personnel. The environment is professional, engineering-focused, and offers exposure to complex, mission-critical vehicle and apparatus designs that provide a strong sense of pride and ownership in the work.
