Mechanical Designer

We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer to layout and design mechanical parts and systems using 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD). The role requires an understanding of how designs are applied, interact with other assemblies, and are manufactured. You will use engineering calculations, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and other software tools to prepare and compile necessary calculations to support product designs. The job involves generating engineering release documentation and verifying its accuracy against applicable rules and standards. You will determine the feasibility of modifying existing equipment or designing new equipment, considering cost, time limitations, and other technical and economic factors. Additionally, you will analyze product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine possible design improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Layout and design mechanical parts and systems in 3D CAD.
  • Use engineering calculations and FEA to support product designs.
  • Generate and verify engineering release documentation.
  • Determine feasibility of equipment modification or new designs.
  • Analyze specifications and performance requirements for design improvements.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and fluid power teams for solid modeling and engineering.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in fluid mechanics, casting, weldment, hydraulics, and design.
  • Experience with Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, and complex assemblies.
  • Minimum of 3 years in mechanical design in industries such as automotive, powersports, industrial equipment, or machine/automated equipment.
  • 2-year AAS degree.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Background or interest in fluid power, mechanics, industrial equipment, automotive, or agricultural equipment.
  • Experience with large assemblies, weldment, machine, and routing design.
  • Willingness to learn and good communication skills.
  • Action-oriented with application-level experience being more important than CAD experience.
  • Experience with Inventor preferred, but other CAD packages are considered.

Work Environment

The position is within the Engineering Department, which consists of 75 people, including 4 Engineers, 3 Designers, and 1 contractor. The team primarily works off-site, but on-site work is optional. This role supports both mechanical and electrical teams. The facility is located in Hamel and features a brand new environment dedicated to railroad maintenance services and equipment.
