Mechanical Designer
The Mechanical Designer produces detailed technical plans, specifications, drawings, and models for complex industrial and commercial facilities, with a strong focus on HVAC, piping, and other mechanical building systems. This role leads the design of systems such as industrial and domestic piping, plumbing, HVAC ducting, chillers, boilers, exhaust systems, motor control, process chemicals, fire protection, and related mechanical infrastructure. The Mechanical Designer collaborates closely with engineers and multidisciplinary design teams to create precise, code-compliant environments that meet stringent requirements for temperature, humidity, air quality, and overall system performance.
Responsibilities
- Produce comprehensive technical project plans, specifications, drawings, and 3D models that align with project requirements and client expectations.
- Lead the creation, refinement, and finalization of designs for industrial and domestic piping, plumbing, HVAC ducting, chillers, boilers, exhaust systems, motor control, process chemicals, fire protection, and other mechanical building systems as needed.
- Design heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to maintain precise environmental conditions, including control of temperature, humidity, air filtration, and particle levels.
- Apply established mechanical design techniques and exercise sound judgment to adapt and modify design concepts while maintaining compliance with internal CAD standards and quality control procedures.
- Collaborate with mechanical engineers to perform load calculations, airflow balancing, and equipment sizing to achieve accurate temperature, humidity, and air quality control.
- Work closely with design teams, engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to clarify objectives, resolve complex design features, and propose practical solutions to unique technical challenges.
- Coordinate effectively with other design disciplines, including electrical, structural, process/chemical, and architectural teams, to ensure fully integrated and constructible design packages.
- Conduct field verifications and site assessments to confirm existing conditions, identify and resolve discrepancies, and incorporate findings into design documents.
- Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues during construction, updating drawings and documentation as required.
- Participate in design reviews and respond clearly and professionally to requests for information (RFIs) from project stakeholders and construction teams.
- Ensure all mechanical designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE 62.1, IMC, NFPA 90A, and relevant local building codes.
- Maintain accurate, organized project files and CAD models, adhering to team standards and best practices.
Essential Skills
- GED or equivalent education.
- Minimum of 2 years of mechanical design experience.
- At least 1 year of experience working on industrial-type projects such as data centers, semiconductor facilities, tool install projects, healthcare facilities, or oil and gas environments.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for mechanical design and drafting.
- Experience designing HVAC systems, including ductwork layouts and equipment selection.
- Experience designing chillers, boilers, pump hydraulics, exhaust systems, and similar mechanical building systems.
- Experience with process chemicals, wastewater discharge, or comparable mechanical process systems.
- Familiarity with ASHRAE 62.1, IMC, NFPA 90A, and local building codes relevant to mechanical system design.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to support effective collaboration with engineers, project managers, and clients, and to respond clearly during design reviews and RFIs.
- Ability to interpret and produce detailed technical drawings, models, and specifications.
- Ability to work on-site full-time and support projects that require coordination with multiple disciplines.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Associate degree in engineering, architecture, or a related technical discipline is preferred.
- 5 or more years of mechanical design experience is a plus.
- 3 to 5 years of experience as a Mechanical Designer in an industrial or high-tech environment is ideal.
- Proficiency in Revit for 3D mechanical modeling and coordination is highly desirable.
- Experience using Navisworks for model coordination and clash detection is preferred.
- Experience with PIPE-FLO or similar hydraulic modeling tools is a strong plus.
- Experience in semiconductor facilities or tool install projects is highly valued.
- Experience working on data centers, healthcare, oil and gas, or other complex industrial facilities is beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple design tasks concurrently.
- Detail-oriented approach with a strong focus on quality, accuracy, and adherence to standards.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, on-site role at a large semiconductor facility, working closely with a multidisciplinary engineering and design team of approximately 50 employees. The schedule typically consists of 5 days per week on-site, with a start time between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM, offering some flexibility, and an expected workload of approximately 40 to 50 hours per week with eligibility for overtime. The environment is fast-paced and highly technical, focused on advanced semiconductor and tool install projects that require precise coordination across mechanical, electrical, structural, process/chemical, and architectural disciplines. You will use tools such as AutoCAD, and may also work with Revit, Navisworks, PIPE-FLO, and other industry-standard software to support design and coordination. The facility follows standard industrial and construction-site safety practices, and you will spend time both in an office/design setting and in the field conducting site walks and verifications. Comprehensive benefits typically include health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, a retirement savings plan with employer participation, paid time off, and paid holidays, supporting both professional growth and work-life balance.
