Mechanical Engineer

This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on providing hands-on production support to machining and assembly areas while contributing to the design and development of specialized fire and emergency vehicles and related plumbing and body systems. You will translate engineering concepts into manufacturable designs, support new product development, and collaborate closely with internal and external customers in a growing engineering team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide production support to machining areas by reviewing, troubleshooting, and improving mechanical designs to ensure manufacturability and efficiency.
  • Support assembly areas by clarifying design intent, resolving fit and function issues, and updating documentation as needed.
  • Analyze engineering sketches, specifications, drawings, and related data to determine critical design factors such as size, shape, and arrangement of parts.
  • Sketch rough layouts and develop detailed concepts that guide the creation and refinement of mechanical components and assemblies.
  • Compute angles, weights, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, leverages, and hole locations to ensure safe, functional, and efficient designs.
  • Plan and formulate engineering programs for assigned projects, including defining scope, technical approach, and design milestones.
  • Organize project activities in coordination with project staff to ensure timely completion of design and development tasks.
  • Contribute to the design and development of fire and emergency vehicle systems, including plumbing and body components.
  • Use CAD tools to create, modify, and maintain mechanical drawings, models, and drafting documentation.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including engineering, production, and assembly teams, to align design solutions with operational needs.
  • Work with external customers to understand requirements and translate them into practical mechanical designs.
  • Support new product development initiatives by generating concepts, evaluating design options, and participating in design reviews.
  • Ensure designs adhere to applicable standards, internal guidelines, and quality expectations.
  • Continuously seek opportunities to improve existing designs, processes, and documentation to support growth and efficiency.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in mechanical engineering or mechanical design, with exposure to production support in machining and assembly environments.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design principles, including sizing, shaping, and arranging parts within complex assemblies.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze engineering sketches, specifications, and technical drawings.
  • Capability to compute angles, weights, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, leverages, and hole locations for mechanical components.
  • Experience using CAD tools, including AutoCAD, for mechanical design and drafting.
  • Background in new product development, contributing to the design and introduction of new mechanical products or systems.
  • Strong drafting skills for creating clear, accurate, and manufacturable drawings.
  • Effective communication skills for working with internal and external customers on design requirements and solutions.
  • Ability to plan and organize engineering work within a project framework, coordinating with project staff as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a designer or mechanical engineer in a similar environment is preferred, though candidates with strong design capabilities will be considered.
  • Familiarity with working in a growing engineering team and contributing to process and product improvements.
  • Comfort collaborating across functions, including engineering, production, and customer-facing roles.

Work Environment

This role is based in an office setting focused on mechanical design and engineering support. You will work closely with a group of approximately 17 engineering professionals in a collaborative, team-oriented environment that combines a small-company feel with the resources of a larger engineering organization. The team is expanding due to growth, providing opportunities to contribute to new initiatives and product lines, particularly in unique firetruck and emergency vehicle applications. The position involves regular interaction with internal departments and external customers, using CAD and drafting tools to support both design and production activities.
