Mechanical Designer (6-month Contract)

The Mechanical Designer converts legacy models and assemblies into SolidWorks, develops precise 2D drawings and 3D models, and produces complete manufacturing documentation for complex, regulated products. This role applies Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure accuracy, supports engineering change processes, and collaborates closely with mechanical engineers to improve design quality and manufacturability in a highly regulated environment.

Responsibilities

  • Convert existing models, subassemblies, and assemblies from previous generation software into SolidWorks while preserving design intent and accuracy.
  • Create and revise detailed 2D drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks in accordance with established engineering and documentation standards.
  • Generate complete manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs) to support production and procurement.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) standards consistently to ensure clear, accurate, and manufacturable designs.
  • Support engineering change processes by updating released documentation, drawings, and associated records to reflect approved design changes.
  • Maintain drawing standards, revision control, and the overall accuracy of engineering documentation across projects.
  • Collaborate with mechanical engineers to incorporate design changes, address feedback, and implement manufacturability improvements.
  • Work within the requirements and expectations of regulated industries such as aerospace, defense, medical devices, or plastics manufacturing to ensure compliance with relevant standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of CAD practices, documentation templates, and design workflows to enhance efficiency and quality.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of experience applying Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience using SolidWorks for 2D drawings and 3D modeling.
  • At least 5 years of experience working in a regulated industry such as aerospace, defense, medical device, or plastics manufacturing.
  • Strong proficiency in creating and revising detailed 2D drawings and 3D models in SolidWorks.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Solid understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing principles and their application to real-world designs.
  • Experience with modeling and documentation for aerospace, defense, medical device, or plastics manufacturing environments.
  • Ability to maintain drawing standards, manage revision control, and ensure the accuracy of engineering documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with products or systems in maritime, defense, oil and gas, science and research, or offshore wind markets.
  • Familiarity with complex electromechanical or marine systems, including platforms that provide power and real-time data communications.
  • Exposure to unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), marine robotics, or related technologies.
  • Strong collaboration skills with engineers and technicians in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality, compliant engineering documentation.
  • Ability to support continuous improvement of design and documentation processes.

Work Environment

The role is based at the headquarters in Monroe, NJ, where approximately 35 onsite team members, primarily engineers and technicians, collaborate in a clean and professional environment. The setting supports advanced engineering work on intelligent maritime solutions, including platforms that deliver clean and reliable electric power, real-time data communications, and unmanned surface vehicle technologies.
