Staff Piping Designer
The Staff Piping Designer plays a key role in planning, designing, and documenting piping systems for a diverse range of projects. Working as part of a multidisciplinary project team, this position leads various assignments from early planning and proposal preparation through site evaluations, analytical design, and the preparation of reports, specifications, construction documentation, and environmental plans. The designer applies advanced piping design principles, standards, and software tools to produce accurate and high-quality deliverables while meeting project scope, budget, and schedule requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform various phases of project work, including planning, proposal preparation, site evaluations, analytical design, report preparation, specifications, and construction documentation for piping systems.
- Use prescribed methods and standard techniques to complete a variety of design and drafting assignments, including drawing sequence and presentation, incorporating system components, and refining rough sketches.
- Produce complete Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) from verbal or written descriptions provided by design engineers.
- Apply basic and advanced piping formulas, principles, and practices, using a solid understanding of fundamental concepts related to the piping discipline.
- Plan and develop detailed drawings for production work, including problem analysis, design layout, and calculations for non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
- Execute a wide range of piping design assignments using standard techniques, including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various piping system components, and refining rough sketches into final designs.
- Implement and manage changes to designs, sketches, redlines, and markups on ongoing projects, ensuring accuracy and alignment with project requirements.
- Analyze reports, drawings, tests, and other technical data to plan and design piping projects effectively.
- Interpret and incorporate relevant design codes, standards, and specifications into piping designs to meet project and regulatory requirements.
- Review design drawings for quality assurance, ensuring compliance with scope, budget, and schedule constraints.
- Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and timelines, supporting efficient project delivery.
- Compute calculations for layouts, equipment arrangements, wiring diagrams, and schematics related to piping systems and associated components.
- Manage revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project-related information, ensuring all documents are stored in a logical, organized, and well-structured manner.
- Maintain clear and concise written and verbal communication with project teams and clients, supporting effective coordination and issue resolution.
- Follow all applicable company, client, project design, and drafting standards on every assignment.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned to support successful project execution.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in drafting technology or a related field and a minimum of 7 years of related experience, OR an Associate's degree and a minimum of 8 years of related experience, OR a High School diploma and a minimum of 9 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
- Extensive piping design experience, including planning, layout, and detailed design of piping systems for complex projects.
- Advanced proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Plant 3D, CADWorx, and Excel to develop piping design deliverables.
- Ability to effectively utilize both 2D and 3D design applications to prepare accurate engineering drawings.
- Advanced knowledge of piping design principles, calculations, and design systems.
- Advanced understanding of the theory and practices of the piping discipline and familiarity with fundamental concepts of related engineering disciplines.
- Capability to operate discipline-specific design software necessary to execute production tasks.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze reports, drawings, and tests to inform design decisions.
- High attention to detail in design work, documentation, and quality assurance reviews.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to support clear coordination with project managers, engineers, designers, and clients.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary project team environment to resolve design and drawing issues and achieve project objectives.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs as needed.
- Experience interpreting and applying design codes, standards, and specifications to piping design work.
- Experience managing drawing revisions, redlines, and project documentation in an organized and traceable manner.
- Proven ability to perform non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, deadlines, and project priorities within budgeted hours.
Work Environment
The Staff Piping Designer works in a professional, design-focused environment as part of a multidisciplinary project team that includes project managers, engineers, and other designers. The role relies heavily on computer-based design and drafting tools, including AutoCAD, Plant 3D, CADWorx, Excel, and other 2D and 3D applications. Work typically follows established company, client, and project design and drafting standards, with an emphasis on quality, accuracy, and adherence to budget and schedule. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Kansas City, MO.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $50.00/hr.
