Piping Designer

The Piping Designer supports complex oil and gas projects by preparing high-quality mechanical piping design drawings and complete facility design packages. This role works closely with lead designers, project managers, engineers, and other disciplines to deliver safe, efficient, and constructible designs for natural gas, natural gas liquids, oil, CO₂, and related facilities. The designer uses AutoCAD and other 3D mechanical CAD tools to produce layouts, general arrangements, and detailed piping drawings that meet company, client, and industry standards. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to a full-service EPCM environment with strong project diversity, flexible work arrangements, and a performance-based bonus structure.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare all design drawings required to support mechanical piping aspects of client projects, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Develop facility design packages for natural gas, natural gas liquids, oil, CO₂, and other oil and gas–related products using AutoCAD and other industry-standard tools.
  • Create layouts, designs, general arrangements, and P&IDs for facilities in accordance with company and client standards and project-specific design requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with lead designers, project managers, engineers, and other team members throughout all project phases to align design deliverables with project goals.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines, including mapping, engineering, civil drafting, electrical drafting, and project management, to ensure fully integrated design solutions.
  • Analyze design requirements, evaluate alternatives, and recommend practical and cost-effective solutions to meet project and client objectives.
  • Consult with project managers, engineers, designers, and other stakeholders to obtain design details, clarify requirements, and resolve design issues as projects progress.
  • Develop and maintain drawing control for each project, including version management and proper documentation of design changes.
  • Prepare plot plans, enlarged piping plans, sections, detail drawings, and bills of material associated with piping drawing packages.
  • Use P&IDs and plot plans as primary references to commence and develop detailed piping drawings for new and existing facilities.
  • Establish nozzle orientations for vessels and tanks, and define requirements for structures, platforms, and pipe racks to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Determine routing for primary and secondary piping, ensuring appropriate maintenance and operating clearances are incorporated into the design.
  • Perform thorough self-checks of drawings to ensure quality and correctness before submitting work for peer review and squad checks.
  • Conduct QA/QC checks on the work of other designers and drafters, providing feedback and guidance to improve overall design quality.
  • Initiate and manage peer review requests for prepared drawings, and implement corrections or changes identified during the review process.
  • Actively participate in squad checks to identify and prevent interferences between piping and mechanical layouts and layouts prepared by electrical, civil, instrumentation and controls, and other design disciplines.
  • Manage all drawing package issues, including Issue for Approval, Issue for Bid, Issued for Construction, and Issue for As-Built, ensuring proper documentation and distribution.
  • Oversee printing and plotting requirements for each project, ensuring timely delivery of drawing sets to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Keep design managers, design leads, and affected project managers informed of design changes that may impact resource needs, budgets, or project schedules.
  • Complete as-built drawings during and after construction, accurately reflecting field changes and final installation conditions.
  • Participate in lessons-learned initiatives to identify process and project improvement opportunities and help implement best practices.
  • Maintain and continually improve proficiency in AutoCAD platforms and related programs used for piping layout and design.
  • Support the broader EPCM service offering by contributing to project development, project management, engineering and design, mapping/GIS, construction management, inspection, and operations and maintenance consulting as needed from a design perspective.

Essential Skills

  • At least 6 years of experience in the design of compressor stations, meter stations, regulating stations, gas and liquids processing plants, valve assemblies, and other related oil and gas facilities.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for mechanical and piping design, including preparation of layouts, general arrangements, and detailed piping drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D design and mechanical CAD tools used for piping and facility layout.
  • Strong background in mechanical piping design for natural gas, natural gas liquids, oil, CO₂, and related products within the oil and gas industry.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop P&IDs, plot plans, and related engineering documents for use in piping design.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing plot plans, enlarged piping plans, sections, detail drawings, and bills of material for piping packages.
  • Proven ability to coordinate with multiple disciplines such as civil, electrical, mapping, and instrumentation to produce integrated designs.
  • Experience establishing nozzle orientations, structural and platform requirements, and pipe rack layouts to support facility operations and maintenance.
  • Strong QA/QC skills, including self-checking of drawings and checking the work of other designers and drafters.
  • Ability to manage drawing control and handle multiple drawing issue stages, including approval, bid, construction, and as-built packages.
  • Effective communication skills to consult with project managers, engineers, designers, and other stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Associates degree in mechanical AutoCAD design or equivalent experience in mechanical AutoCAD design.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with CADWorx for piping layout and design.
  • Familiarity with Plant 3D and other 3D design platforms used in industrial facility design.
  • Experience with Civil 3D in support of site and civil-related aspects of piping projects.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and Inventor (including AutoCAD Inventor) for mechanical design and drafting.
  • Background in mechanical drafting and mechanical design for industrial or oil and gas facilities.
  • Experience with pipeline design and related facilities such as compressor and metering stations.
  • Prior exposure to full-service EPCM environments, including project development, engineering and design, mapping/GIS, construction management, inspection, and operations and maintenance consulting.
  • Experience working on natural gas mechanical design projects, particularly for senior-level candidates who may work remotely.
  • Interest in participating in lessons-learned programs and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design processes and project outcomes.

Work Environment

The role is based in a medium-sized, multidisciplinary engineering office with approximately 35–50 people rotating between office and field assignments. The environment is collaborative and project-focused, with engineers, project managers, designers, and field personnel working together across multiple disciplines. The organization offers a flexible work culture, with leadership willing to accommodate reasonable schedule and personal needs. For strong non-local candidates, the company is open to remote or near-remote arrangements, such as primarily remote work with occasional in-office presence. The team operates within a full-service EPCM framework, supporting project development, project management, land and right-of-way services, surveys, engineering and design, mapping/GIS, construction management, inspection, and operations and maintenance consulting. Designers use AutoCAD and other 3D mechanical CAD tools daily, and the office environment supports modern design workflows, plotting, and printing. A very competitive end-of-year bonus structure is available, and the culture emphasizes flexibility, professional growth, and long-term project engagement.
