Equipment & Tool Designer (Asset Design)

Boeing South Carolina is seeking a Mid-Level or Senior Equipment and Tooling Designer with a focus on composite and metals fabrication. Responsible for designing, fabricating, assembling and/or reviewing various equipment and tooling in support of 787 interior assemblies. Candidates will be responsible for supporting shop requested equipment, tooling, hardware and supporting the design and fabrication of tooling solutions including the use of automation and robotics to satisfy the need.

This position is located in Ladson, South Carolina (Bldg. 88-50). This position is not open to virtual work as it is a manufacturing facing position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Investigates and develops complex equipment and tooling concepts and specifications to satisfy aerospace product design and build requirements.
  • Participates in design reviews, collects design requirements, creates and revises drawings and models to support the build plan.
  • A creative problem solver with appropriate right size solutions as needed.
  • Creates specifications, purchase requests and usage instructions for equipment and tooling.
  • Self-checks designs for compliance with safety, producibility, maintainability, reliability, ergonomic factors and regulatory requirements.
  • Develops and documents equipment and tooling inspection and usage instructions, preventative maintenance plans, and supports user training development.
  • Provides technical support for engineering changes and discrepancies by investigating problems and analyzing data to identify solutions.
  • Maintains hardware and software configuration.
  • Supports the disposition of equipment and tooling.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):

  • Ability to develop moderately complex tooling concepts and builds using a variety of machining equipment and/or modeling software packages
  • Ability to check tool concepts and designs for safety or ergonomic impact
  • Verbal and written skills, teaming skills, technical skills, and integration skills.
  • Ability to make leveraged decisions on limited data
  • Be able to lift at least 50lbs

Typical Education / Experience:

  • Education/experience typically acquired through advanced education (e.g. Associate) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (e.g. Bachelor+1 years' related work experience, 5 years' related work experience, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Familiarity with Pneumatic and Electrical/PLC equipment control systems
  • Machining, fabrication and welding experience
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Basic understanding general dimension & tolerance (GD&T)
  • Experience operating and maintaining various fabrication tools (CNC equipment, drill press, saws, grinder, hand tools etc.).
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, methods, fabrication processes (e.g., forming, stamping, machining, heat treatment, machines/machine tools, composite tooling, cutting tools and fluids, N/C programming, instrumentation, data acquisition and control systems). Ability to select the best method of producing parts, tools or assemblies.
  • Use of precision measuring tools e.g. calipers, micrometers, dial Indicators, etc.
  • Engineering design software familiarity including Catia, AutoCAD etc.

Mid-Level: $63,750-$86,250

Senior: $75,650-$102,350
