Interior Designer

As an Interior Designer you will serve as a technical specialist in interior design (FFE and SID) for projects designed by the Middle East District or architectural-engineering (A-E) firms under Government contract.

Responsible for making the final detailed check and review of the work; recommendations for technical sufficiency; coordination of details and design features; and adherence to design criteria and established policy.

Responsible for design of projects which are extensive in scope and complexity, requiring skill, ingenuity, creativity, and/or knowledge of advanced principles, techniques, and procedures.

Analyze, edit, and coordinate any request for design or construction changes of any size or cost after award of contract.

Assist architects and engineers in preparation of contract documents, which include drawings, specifications, and design analysis for a variety of complex military and civil facilities.

Make field trips to overseas project sites to advise on the feasibility and scope of improvements to existing facilities, from the standpoint of existing practices, materials, and cost considerations.

Keep abreast of development and use of new materials, their cost and fabrication through literature published by manufacturers, news articles, and contacts with manufacturers, reports, and recommendations concerning use of such materials.

Prepare Comprehensive Interior Design (CID) packages inclusive of both Structural Interior Design (SID) and Furniture, Fixtures, and Equipment (FFE) packages.

Conditions of Employment

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Work may involve periodic long and short TDY to overseas locations in the Middle East District area of responsibility (AOR).
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 15% of the time
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment

For GS-07

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. analyzing, editing, and/or coordinating any request for design or construction changes of any size or cost after award of contract; 2. using experience and initiative in applying and adapting practices, where significant departures from established practices and precedents are required; and 3. developing technical guidance for use by installations and other design disciplines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as [insert applicable field(s) of study]. OR Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. [Note: Remove the words "such as that identified in Education above" if the position you are filling does not require education in specific fields found in an Individual Occupational Requirement.] Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. assisting architects and engineers in preparation of contract documents, which include drawings, specifications, and design analysis for a variety of complex military and civil facilities; 2. evaluating design objectives, making calculations, and identifying the most economical and effective procedures for project development; and 3. furnishing to higher authority the technical cost information to support decisions on modifications to contracts. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as [insert applicable field(s) of study].

For GS-11

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. investigating failure of materials which are unsatisfactory from fabrication or installation standpoint and report on findings with recommended solution; 2. checking contractor shop drawings for compliance with contract plans and specifications and properly annotate shop drawings; and 3. preparing sketches or change drawings and specifications to eliminate potential problems; planning and/or overseeing demonstrations by manufacturers' representatives. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as [insert applicable field(s) of study].

For GS-12

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1. reviewing work by in-house staff, A-E firms, and other Corps offices for excellence and compliance with regulations and criteria; 2. making direct recommendations to other technical units, covering matters such as estimated time for completion of work, factual and technical data, and the cost of alternate methods, materials, or equipment; and 3. preparing preliminary engineering and architectural final plans and detail drawings for a variety of projects, in support of the U.S. Military and foreign governments.
