Research Professor

The Research Professor supports the Department of the Navy's Operational Energy education mission by designing and delivering graduate-level Energy Security and related courses for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). This role develops distributed-learning content, integrates multimedia instructional elements, and provides online and hybrid instruction that strengthens C5ISR engineering capabilities across the Naval Enterprise. By developing high-quality curriculum and guiding students through applied systems engineering concepts, you help build the next generation of technical leaders who enhance national energy security and counter hybrid threats across physical, cyber, informational, and unconventional domains.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Design and develop a complete graduate-level courses aligned with NPS academic standards, certificate pathways, and master's-level learning outcomes.
  • Create course design documents, learning objectives, and assessment strategies that support operational energy-related distributed learning.
  • Build online and hybrid course materials using the NPS Sakai learning management system.
  • Integrate multimedia assets-including graphics, videos, simulations, and interactive components-to enhance learner engagement and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with EAG faculty, subject matter experts, and the Academic Associate to structure content into effective learning modules.
  • Conduct iterative content reviews and incorporate feedback to ensure academic rigor and instructional quality.
  • Deliver quarterly online instruction, supervise student engagement, and perform grading in accordance with NPS practices.
  • Ensure compliance with NPS academic policies, accessibility requirements, and instructional design standards.
  • Support in-residence instructional sessions as required by the course schedule and SOW.
  • Travel to designated CONUS locations for course delivery and coordination.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field
  • 8 years relevant experience with Masters in related field
  • 14 years relevant experience with a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience designing, developing, or delivering technical coursework, training, or instructional materials.

Background & Technical Knowledge

  • Knowledge of curriculum development principles, tools, and methodologies.
  • Experience with instructional design, online course development, or distributed learning environments.
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), preferably Sakai or similar platforms.
  • Ability to create multimedia-enhanced instructional content and ensure accessibility compliance.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering concepts relevant to C5ISR, operational energy, or defense applications.
  • Ability to support hybrid instructional models combining online and in-residence delivery.

Credentials

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Eligibility to obtain a SECRET clearance upon determination of need.
  • Valid U.S. passport or ability to obtain one prior to first OCONUS travel window
  • Willingness and ability to travel to CONUS and OCONUS locations including Monterey, CA; San Diego, CA; Washington, DC; Oberammergau, Germany; Vilnius, Lithuania; Bydgoszcz, Poland; Tirana, Albania; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Belgrade, Serbia.

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience teaching or developing curriculum at the graduate level.
  • Background supporting DoD, Navy, or Joint technical education programs.
  • Familiarity with SysML, Cameo/MagicDraw.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty, SMEs, or academic program offices.
  • Graduate-level education in systems engineering, engineering management, or a related technical field.

Physical Requirements

Job performance will normally require only minor lifting and carrying of boxes of records or equipment.
