Mechanical Designer (COD)

Eaton's ES AMER ARS PDCAD division is currently seeking a Mechanical Designer (COD). This role will take place at our growing facility in Sumter, SC.

The primary function of the Mechanical Customer Order Designer (COD) is to provide either mechanical design and documentation support for our electrical switchgear and control products. Specific roles will be assigned based on the candidate skillsets demonstrated and the needs of our engineering operations.

This position utilizes CAD technology to perform either 2D/3D mechanical designs. The role requires technical work requiring a high degree of creativity as well as technical design and drafting skills, demonstrating a thorough understanding of basic materials, mechanical and electrical principles, and manufacturing concepts in the development of standard product designs and/or processing of customer orders of the most complex nature.

This role includes, but is not limited to engineering designs, collaborating with Customer Order Engineers, Application Engineers and Manufacturing Associates, utilization of design automation software, and producing/maintaining manufacturing documentation.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $56000 - $83000 a year. Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

What You'll Do:

  • Work to standard procedures or written and oral instructions from supervisor.
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude as well as familiarity in reading schematic diagrams to determine mechanical and electrical design requirements and associated layouts.
  • For electrically focused roles: Prepare complex layouts, circuit diagrams, sketches and drawings relating to new and modified equipment specifications, as well as from customer engineering interpretation to the general order (CAD).
  • For mechanically focused roles: Prepare complex layouts, coordinate bus connection details, sketches, 3-D models, flat files, and drawings using CAD 3D models or various other computer programs and software, relating to new and modified designs.
  • Manage Manufacturing and Engineering Change Notices.
  • Demonstrate advanced computer skills with ability to learn required software (Bid Manager, AutoCAD, Inventor, Design Automation, MAPICS).
  • Interpret engineering work packages to develop designs and manufacturing information packages.
  • Coordinate with different levels of the organization to ensure schedules are met.
  • Detailed Bill of Material reviews for editing and accuracy.
  • Demonstrate the ability to handle multiple projects/assignments/duties.

Qualifications:

Required (Basic) Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Engineering/Design Technology or equivalent degree from an accredited institution that is already completed or completed by end of 2026.
  • 3 months of experience in 3D CAD or equivalent coursework OR 3 months of experience with electrical circuits and principles.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in drafting or design of electrical switchgear or control products.

Skills:

  • Understanding and application of drafting standards and techniques (using computer-aided engineering software)
  • Capability to visualize components, features and assemblies in three-dimensional space
  • Ability to use required engineering software tools and other common computer software (word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, etc.)

Additional Information:

Quality Systems / Corporate Programs: Ensure compliance where applicable with systems and programs such as: ISO 9000-2000, ISO 14001, Underwriters Laboratory, NEMA, etc. Participate in and demonstrate understanding of other programs, such as: Eaton Business System (EBS), Management of Environmental Safety and Health (MESH), etc.
