Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit is hiring for a full-time position in Petaluma, CA. The salary is negotiable. The department is Communications and Marketing. The position closes on 8/1/2025 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana.

Under general supervision, performs a variety of responsible paraprofessional and technical work in support of the District's marketing, communications, and outreach programs and initiatives; assists with creating and implementing programs to increase public awareness of the District; develops marketing and promotional content for digital and print media; assists in maintaining and the District's websites; provides technical staff assistance to the Communications and Marketing Manager; and performs related duties, as assigned.

Supervision received and exercised: Receives general supervision from Communications and Marketing Manager. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Class characteristics: This is a fully qualified journey-level classification responsible for independently performing a variety of paraprofessional and technical duties in support of the District's communications, marketing, and community outreach programs and activities. Positions at this level exercise judgment and initiative in their assigned tasks, receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Examples of typical job functions (illustrative only):

  • Assists with coordination of social media and digital programs and content to increase public awareness and promote the agency's overall goals and mission.
  • Develops a variety of marketing, educational, and promotional materials, including announcements, flyers, instructional documents, and related marketing and educational materials.
  • Assists in developing social media content; monitors blogs and social media platforms for communicating District services, programs, and events; drafts responses for social media as needed; travels throughout the community and the District's service area to collect images, videos, and related visual content.
  • Coordinates assigned community outreach meetings and events; creates and coordinates publications and advertisements in local media; participates and attends events as the District representative.
  • Supports the Communications and Marketing Manager on marketing programs, outreach events, informational materials, advertisements, and displays.
  • Prepares agendas and presentation materials for community outreach meetings, special events and public hearings as needed.
  • Maintains and modifies agency websites as needed.
  • Assists management staff with high visibility outreach events, including groundbreakings and ribbon cuttings; may attend community meetings.
  • Assists in the scheduling, negotiating cost and purchasing of media space and time; coordinates purchasing and stocking various educational and promotional materials including banners and displays; orders and stocks marketing materials.
  • Assists the Communications and Marketing Manager with a variety of administrative support activities as needed; compiles data and conducts basic research; summarizes information and prepares written reports and correspondence; and coordinates activities with other departments or external agencies.
  • Prepares and operates video recording and agenda sync for public meetings.
  • Attends and participates in meetings and community and promotional events, including on weekends and evenings.
  • Maintains a variety of files and records.
  • Adheres to all required safety procedures and programs.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles, methods and techniques of effective public communications, public relations, marketing communications, and community outreach.
  • Social and digital media applications, programs, and platforms.
  • A variety of graphic design and web-based applications.
  • Techniques for preparing effective written and visual materials.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and District staff.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar.
  • Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.

Ability to:

  • Draft, edit and proofread written materials for publication.
  • Coordinate outreach and promotional activities and events.
  • Write copy for advertising and social media with attention to multiple voices reflected in social media platforms.
  • Use initiative and creativity in developing programs and content.
  • Independently organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines, and follow-up on assignments.
  • Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, using appropriate English grammar and syntax.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education and experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college with major coursework in marketing, communications, business administration, or related field. Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Experience: Three (3) years of technical experience supporting marketing, communications, and outreach programs and initiatives.

Licenses and certifications: Possession of a California Class C driver's license, to be maintained throughout employment.
