Communications/Marketing Specialist (Temporary)

The Communications/Marketing Specialist (Temporary) is responsible for planning, creating, and managing content across all official social media platforms for the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office. This position supports brand awareness, public education campaigns, and community outreach initiatives through strategic storytelling and digital engagement.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented content creator with strong visual storytelling skills and a passion for public service communication. This role works closely with the Communications Manager and collaborates with various divisions including Investigations, HazMat, and Inspections to produce compelling and educational content. This position requires occasional evening and weekend availability to support community outreach events.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day social media operations for the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office across platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn.
  • Develop and maintain monthly content calendars aligned with departmental goals, public safety priorities, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Create, capture, edit, and publish engaging content, including graphics, short-form videos, reels, photos, captions, and safety messaging.
  • Highlight fire and life safety education, investigations, hazardous materials (HazMat) response, inspections, training activities, and community outreach efforts.
  • Write clear, accurate, and engaging captions, scripts, and occasional website or digital content.
  • Monitor social media engagement, respond to comments and messages appropriately, and escalate inquiries when necessary.
  • Ensure all messaging reflects professionalism, accuracy, and adherence to County communication and brand guidelines.
  • Assist in planning and executing public safety campaigns, seasonal awareness initiatives, and promotional efforts for events and programs.
  • Track and analyze key performance metrics, providing monthly reports with insights and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with division leadership and county partners to gather accurate information and develop content.
  • Attend and support community outreach events, including occasional evenings and weekends, to capture and promote real-time content.
  • Provide support for newsletters, presentations, digital materials, and other communications projects as needed.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned in support of the Communications team and agency mission.

Requirements

Education and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Digital Media, Public Relations, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to travel locally to various field locations and event sites.

Automatic Disqualification:

  • Open arrest for any criminal offense. (Felony or Misdemeanor)
  • Family Violence conviction.

Preferences

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in social media management, content creation, marketing coordination, or related communications role.
  • OR
  • Experience in government, public safety, emergency services, or community-focused organizations is preferred.
  • Previously trained in NIMS IS-100, IS-200, IS-300, IS-700 and IS-800.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Temp Full-time | 3-Month Assignment
  • Monday - Friday | 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM
  • May require to work nights, weekends

Salary:

  • $26.00 - $27.00 Hourly
  • Depends on Qualifications
