Design Squad Leader (Engineering Manager I)

The Utah Department of Transportation is seeking a driven, highly skilled professional to fill the role of Design Squad Leader (Engineering Manager I) within Region Two in Salt Lake City, Utah. In this critical leadership role, you will provide advanced technical expertise and oversight for the design and engineering of state roadways; supervise, mentor and develop a dedicated team of design engineers, fostering a culture of excellence; and ensure the efficient, timely production and delivery of complete, high-quality design packages ready for project advertisement.

Principal Duties As the Design Squad Lead, you will:

  • Manage project delivery in the design phase.
  • Oversee both in house and consultant design projects.
  • Design and review standards for the region encroachment permits.
  • Develop a schedule to deliver design team project staffing.
  • Coordinate and monitor the work in the tasks.
  • Supervise employees on the Design team and oversee their performance.
  • Mentor the design engineers and rotational engineers to develop their technical competence and define their work load.
  • Ensure that department quality control and assurance goals are met.
  • Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or work unit and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.
  • Be involved in statewide committees for the development and revisions of standards, design reference manuals and materials, and the overall development of the design groups statewide.
  • Participates in the selection of consulting engineers, oversees and reviews their work product.
  • Complete any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications The best qualified candidate will:

  • Be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah in accordance with the provisions of Utah Code Annotated 58-22.
  • Have at least 2 years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Have excellent communication, facilitation, and organizational skills.
  • Have a strong background in roadway design with a clear understanding of AASHTO and Department design standards codes and criteria.
