Temporary Instructional Designer

The Workforce Education & Engagement Unit supports these goals by ensuring our workforce has access to high-quality technical and safety training.

We are seeking a Temporary Instructional Designer to support the review and design of curriculum used in Seattle City Light's Apprenticeship programs. This role focuses on reviewing, refining, and standardizing existing technical training materials so they are consistent, easy to use, and instructionally aligned, while also developing course materials for adaptive skills training that support apprentices' broader professional growth.

The ideal candidate will be collaborative, detail-oriented, and skilled in developing training materials that align with adult learning principles and safety-critical work environments.

This temporary position will work closely with journey-level craft instructors, subject matter experts, and apprenticeship program leadership.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more about what you'll be doing:

  • Review existing apprenticeship training materials, lesson plans, assessments, and instructor guides.
  • Redesign curriculum to improve clarity, flow, and alignment with apprenticeship learning objectives and safety standards.
  • Create updated instructional materials, including facilitator guides, participant workbooks, assessment tools, and job aids.
  • Translate SME and craft-based technical knowledge into accessible instructional content.
  • Support craft instructors in implementing redesigned curriculum in classroom and field settings.
  • Ensure instructional materials reflect adult learning theory and competency-based training best practices.
  • Maintain documentation, version control, and organization of updated curriculum.
  • Collaborate across teams to ensure training materials meet program and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Science, Business or Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Other combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Experience:

  • Three years of professional experience in adult training/education administration, training project management, and/or educational consulting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and equitable outcomes.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience redesigning technical or craft-based curriculum for apprenticeship or workforce training programs.
  • Skill in developing clear instructional materials (guides, workbooks, assessments, presentations).
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles and competency-based training approaches.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with SMEs, instructors, and diverse teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working in complex or unionized environments.
  • Adaptability and a growth-oriented mindset.

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $47.39 to $55.19 per hour.
