Principal Graphic Designer

The City of Detroit's Department of Transportation (DDOT) is currently seeking Principal Graphic Designer for the DDOT Vehicle Operation Division. Under general supervision, the Principal Graphic Designer is responsible for producing critical information pieces for internal and external audiences. Interprets large volumes of detailed information into clear and accurate materials for a variety of communications, promotional and advertising tools. Works with a variety of internal parties. Collaborates with other groups, such as Operations, Maintenance and Human Resources, to disseminate final information products to end-users.

Examples of Duties

Beyond a typical graphic designer or marketing specialist, the Principal Graphic Designer – DDOT directly engages with the planning and operation of transit service. As such, is uniquely positioned to know the context for each project and originate materials with minimal need for translation.

  1. Interprets raw and draft sketches into finished graphic outputs.
  2. Creates internal maps for use by transit operations and training staff, including operator maps, detour maps, turnaround/layover diagrams and site plans.
  3. Create infographics and other public facing material for outreach.
  4. Designs internal pieces for employee communication, training and recruitment purposes.
  5. Create print and digital signage for bus stops, ad shelters and other available media spaces citywide.
  6. Creates and edits images for use on website and in documents.
  7. Creates environmental graphics, such as wayfinding signage, bus stop markings and vehicle placards.
  8. Collaborates with Marketing and Service Development staff to produce other product-focused outreach materials.
  9. Conduct on-site visits to various locations to collect data, sizing information and distribute materials depending on the task.
  10. Update, maintain, and backup all digital materials for quick access and archival purposes.
  11. Applies the Department's brand to a wide range of internal and external materials.
  12. Advises on the process of creating and refining digital information tools, such as websites and apps.
  13. Maintains organized inventory of proofs, edits, markups and final drafts for all projects.
  14. Prepares distribution/dissemination plans for finished materials.
  15. Interfaces with end-users to identify strengths and weaknesses of information materials.
  16. Film, edit and post social media content of high caliber with respect for city policy.

Knowledge of graphic industry software, knowledge of a variety of artistic techniques and media. Skills in the techniques and applications of computer graphics and desktop publishing. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to interact effectively with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients, printers and vendors.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed in a design studio setting with exposure to video display units. Occasionally required to mount finished work using spray adhesives. There is some fieldwork that includes attending meetings, checking proofs at printing establishments, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications (required): Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Illustration, Geography or related field. Three years of experience in general layout and graphic design including two years of experience in technical illustration or geography. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

  • Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.
  • In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); - An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
