Design Intern

Are you a current or prospective Civil Engineering student? Do you have an interest in transportation design? We are looking for a Design Intern to join our team to provide support to pavement management and design engineers within the Design Group.

Our design team manages pavement and bridge and deliver the City of Bellevue's transportation projects. We perform design work and project management on roadway, bikeway/walkway, and intersection improvements. This includes developing designs for roadways, storm water, earthwork, non-structural retaining walls, traffic signals, and illumination. This internship is an excellent opportunity for students to gain real-world experience with transportation design, as you assist design engineers with the necessary field work, AutoCAD drafting, cost estimating, and other engineering work needed to design and deliver projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with AutoCAD drafting, cost estimating, permitting, and other design engineering tasks.
  • Gather and process field data such as photos, videos, and field measurements.
  • Assist with curb ramp inventories and design
  • Assist organizing pavement data
  • Assist citywide pavement and curb ramp inventories

Qualifications:

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License and acceptable driving record required.
  • Familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office required.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, SharePoint, and Bluebeam preferred.
  • Interest in Civil Engineering/Transportation.
  • Willingness to work and desire to learn.
  • Ability to work 15-20 hours per week while in school and 40 hours per week during the summer and on school breaks

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 10 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately quiet.

Flexible/Hybrid Working: A hybrid work schedule is available for this position after an orientation period working in the office after hire. Remote work for this position is subject to department's operational needs and will be discussed with candidates during the selection process. Full-time remote work is not an available option. Once hired, employees must reside in the State of Washington and within reasonable commuting distance to Bellevue City Hall.

Definition of Student Intern:

  • Must be enrolled in a bona fide education program. Full time employees taking evening classes, those enrolled in one course, or those going to school periodically are not considered student interns.
  • During the school year must be scheduled to work 20 hours or fewer per week.
  • During special situations (i.e. specific internship programs through school) or during school breaks, can be scheduled to work more than 20 hours, up to full time, if appropriate.
  • Must be terminated as a student intern when no longer associated with an education program.
  • At-will for the duration of the student intern status.
