Headway

Connects patients with in-network mental health providers, simplifying insurance, scheduling, and billing for affordable, accessible therapy and psychiatry.

Director, Clinical Product

Headway's mission is a big one – to build a new mental health care system everyone can access. We've built technology that helps people find great therapists with the first software-enabled national network of providers accepting insurance.

1 in 4 people in the US have a treatable mental health condition, but the majority of providers don't accept insurance, making therapy too expensive for most people. Headway is building a new mental healthcare system that everyone can access by making it easy for therapists to accept insurance and scale their practice.

Headway was founded in 2019. Since then, we've grown into a diverse, national network of over 60,000 mental healthcare providers across all 50 states who run their practice on our software and have served over 1 million patients. We're a Series D company with over $325m in funding from a16z (Andreessen Horowitz), Accel, GV (formerly Google Ventures), Spark Capital, Thrive Capital, Forerunner Ventures and Health Care Service Corporation.

We want your time here to be the most meaningful experience of your career. Join us, and help change mental healthcare for the better.

As Director, Clinical Product at Headway, you'll embed behavioral health expertise into the design, governance, and evolution of our digital platform.

This is a rare opportunity for a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist who has worked inside high-growth startups and partnered directly with product and engineering teams to build AI-enabled healthcare tools. You will ensure our products are clinically sound, ethically designed, compliant with evolving standards, and aligned with best practices in patient safety and quality.

You will operate at the intersection of clinical care, AI innovation, and product strategy translating complex behavioral health workflows into scalable digital solutions that empower over 70,000 clinicians and millions of patients.

This role requires strong collaboration, leadership skills, clear communication, and the ability to execute both independently and within cross-functional teams. Your work will directly support our mission to build a best-in-class digital experience that empowers clinicians to deliver high quality, effective, patient-centered care at scale.

This is a unique opportunity to define how responsible AI and clinical quality are operationalized at a national scale for a mission that truly matters — expanding access to effective, personalized mental health care.

This role is for a startup-savvy clinical leader who has:

  • 10+ years of post-graduate experience (PsyD, PhD, MD, or DO)
  • Worked inside high-growth healthcare or digital health startups
  • Partnered closely with product teams to build digital or AI-driven tools
  • Experience with AI governance, risk frameworks, and clinical standards
  • Deep expertise in quality, patient safety, and behavioral health operations

You will:

  • Distill complex clinical processes and language in order to help drive roadmap execution and move product implementation forward
  • Shape patient-facing and clinician-facing digital tools
  • Lead clinical oversight of AI-enabled features
  • Define safety guardrails and quality metrics
  • Translate complex clinical workflows into scalable product requirements
  • Drive cross-functional alignment across clinical, product, data, and ops

Compensation and Benefits:

The expected base pay range for this position is $200,000 - $330,000 based on a variety of factors including qualifications, experience, and geographic location. In addition to base salary, this role may be eligible for an equity grant, depending on the position and level.

We are committed to offering a comprehensive and competitive total rewards package, including robust health and wellness benefits, retirement savings, and meaningful ownership opportunities through equity. Compensation decisions are made holistically, ensuring fairness and alignment with market benchmarks while recognizing individual contributions and potential.
