College Intern - Mechatronic Systems & AI Design

As an Innovation Intern, you'll be part of a dynamic R&D team pushing the boundaries of mechanical hardware and intelligent systems.

To design smarter, more adaptive motion control systems and apply design thinking and AI to solve real-world engineering challenges.

Design and optimize motion control systems (motors, transmission drives) with a focus on precision, adaptability, and performance.

Apply design thinking methodologies to prototype, test, and refine mechanical and thermal solutions for mechatronic system.

Integrate AI-driven analysis to enhance system accuracy, predictive maintenance, and performance tuning.

Develop and execute R&D characterization plans for form/fit/function, shock and vibration, reliability, acoustics, and power metrics.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to drive innovation and resolve technical challenges.

Lead mini-projects and contribute to larger development efforts, representing the mechanical/electrical/thermal team.

Perform data analysis on global field data to gain insight for product improvements.

Individuals who do well in this role at HP, usually possess:

You're a curious, hands-on problem solver who's excited about blending mechanical engineering with intelligent systems.

Enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields.

Availability for a 5-6 months full-time internship.

Strong foundation in kinematics, servo control, and motion systems.

Familiarity with AI concepts (e.g., machine learning, predictive modeling) and how they apply to engineering.

Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C/C++ for simulation, automation, and data analysis.

Experience with 3D CAD tools (e.g., Creo) and designing sheet metal/plastic parts.

A mindset for design thinking—empathy, ideation, prototyping, and iteration.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to present ideas and negotiate solutions.
