Jabil

A global manufacturing services company providing comprehensive electronics design, production, and product management services to various industries.

Test Engineer IV

Jabil is seeking an experienced Test Engineer IV to join our team in Florence, KY to serve as a key technical lead and individual contributor for a new liquid-cooled server rack product line. In this role, you will drive the launch and ongoing support of high-power AI/ML, GPGPU, and hardware accelerator-based server, storage, and networking platforms that feature advanced liquid cooling capabilities. You will develop and optimize test processes for full rack (L10/L11) system assembly and integration, ensuring these complex systems meet quality and performance standards. The Test Engineer will play a pivotal role in both New Product Introduction (NPI) and sustaining production – designing test procedures, analyzing data for continuous improvement, and leveraging liquid cooling expertise to develop end-customer product solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the Following Categories (Other Duties May Be Assigned):

  • Test Development and Execution:
    • Design, develop, and maintain comprehensive test procedures, test fixtures, and software for high-level server assembly and full rack integration in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
    • Ensure test coverage for all system components - from sub-assemblies to fully integrated liquid-cooled racks, including: firmware provisioning, hardware burn-in, functional validation, and safety checks (hi-pot testing, thermal cycling, etc.)
  • Liquid Cooling:
    • Integrate and test liquid cooling systems within the server racks, verifying proper installation and function of pumps, cold plates, radiators/chillers, reservoirs, tubing, and fittings
    • Set up data acquisition instruments (thermocouples, flow meters, pressure sensors, etc.) to monitor coolant flow, pressure, and temperature during testing, and adjust test parameters to ensure effective thermal management under maximum load
    • Implement leak detection and prevention best practices, such as pressure decay tests and sensor-based leak alarms, to catch any coolant leaks early and protect hardware
    • Serve as the Test Engineering lead for New Product Introduction (NPI) activities on the liquid-cooled rack product line
  • Failure Analysis and Debugging:
    • Perform detailed failure analysis on server hardware and cooling subsystems to identify root causes of test failures or performance issues
    • Work closely with diagnostic technicians on the production floor to troubleshoot down to the component level when burn-in or functional tests flag errors, and drive rapid resolution of hardware, firmware, or configuration problems
    • Apply strong problem-solving techniques and use diagnostic tools (logs, Linux command-line utilities, etc.) to isolate issues in both electronic components and the liquid cooling loop
  • Automation and Data Analysis:
    • Develop and maintain automation scripts to execute test sequences, capture test data, and streamline result analysis
    • Analyze test logs and sensor data (thermal, flow, power readings) to evaluate system performance and cooling efficiency, ensuring that sub-components remain within safe operating temperatures
    • Use statistical analysis and data visualization to monitor key performance indicators (yield, throughput, failure rates) and identify trends or systemic issues, providing data-driven feedback for continuous improvement
  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Proactively drive yield improvement and process optimization initiatives. This includes reviewing test data to pinpoint frequent failure modes, and then collaborating with other teams to implement corrective actions that enhance manufacturing yield
    • Explore new testing methodologies, tools, and technologies to continuously enhance test coverage, reduce cycle time, and improve quality
  • Technical Leadership and Training:
    • Lead and mentor test engineering technicians, diagnostic technicians, and junior engineers in daily activities
    • Train new hires on test procedures, Linux command-line usage, basic debugging techniques, and safety protocols as needed
    • Develop training materials and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to build team competency in both general server testing and the specifics of liquid cooling system maintenance
    • Foster a culture of technical excellence, hands-on problem solving, and continuous learning within the team
  • Cross Functional Collaboration:
    • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams - including process engineering, production, quality, and operations - to resolve issues and communicate findings
    • Act as a technical liaison in meetings with customers and internal stakeholders, conveying complex test results, thermal performance data, and failure analysis conclusions in an understandable way
    • Work with manufacturing engineers to ensure that assembly processes align with test requirements and best practices
    • Engage with quality engineers to address any process non-conformances and to improve overall rack build quality
  • Reporting and Communication:
    • Prepare and present regular reports on test process performance to both internal leadership and customers
    • Track and report metrics such as first-pass yield, failure analysis, test cycle time, and throughput
    • Participate in customer reviews and status calls as the test subject-matter expert, ensuring customer requirements are understood and that any feedback is integrated into the test process
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Enforce safety procedures for handling coolants, such as proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), spill containment and cleanup processes, and safe disposal of any hazardous materials
    • Adherence to all Jabil safety, ESD, and security policies
    • Verify that the liquid-cooled rack systems meet relevant industry standards and compliance requirements (thermal, electrical, and environmental), supporting any certification or customer audit processes as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics or Electrical Engineering, or related engineering field (MSEE or advanced degree preferred)
  • At least 6+ years of relevant experience in electronic hardware testing and failure analysis within a fast-paced manufacturing or production environment
  • Direct experience with server or high-performance computing hardware is highly desirable, especially in an NPI or volume-production setting
  • Experience with data acquisition systems (DAQs) and sensors (thermocouples, flow meters, pressure sensors)
  • Advanced understanding of statistical analysis for data-driven decision-making

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of System Architecture: ability to understand how the liquid cooling system integrates with the overall system testing
  • Thermal Management Principles: solid understanding of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics as they apply to liquid cooling solutions. This includes concepts like convection, conduction, heat exchangers, and pump performance
  • Liquid Cooling System Components: familiarity with various liquid cooling components such as pumps, radiators, cold plates, chillers, reservoirs, tubing, fittings, and different types of coolants
  • Instrumentation for Fluid and Thermal Systems: experience with specialized instrumentation for measuring flow rates, pressure, temperature, and coolant properties
  • Leak Detection and Prevention: knowledge of techniques and best practices for detecting and preventing leaks in liquid cooling loops
  • Expertise with Linux Terminal and Bash scripting; ability to train others on Linux basics
  • Intermediate programming skills in Bash and Python
  • Material Compatibility: understanding of the compatibility of different materials used in the cooling loop with various coolants to prevent corrosion or degradation
  • Fluid Handling and Safety: awareness of safety procedures for handling different types of coolants, including any potential hazards

Each of the above qualifications and responsibilities ensures that the Test Engineer can effectively support both the technical challenges of cutting-edge thermal management and the operational demands of a production environment. This role is critical in delivering fully integrated, high-quality rack systems to our cloud and enterprise customers, and in advancing Jabil's capabilities in the growing domain of liquid-cooled datacenter hardware. The successful candidate will be a hands-on technical leader who is passionate about technology, quality, and collaboration, ready to make an immediate impact on our Advanced Compute manufacturing team.
