A growing utilities organization in Charlotte, NC is seeking a Substation Designer to support the design and development of transmission and distribution substation projects. This role will work closely with engineers and project managers to produce detailed design drawings, layouts, and construction packages for high-voltage substations. This position supports new substation construction, expansions, and upgrades across the utility grid.
Develop substation physical design drawings including plan views, elevations, grounding plans, and equipment layouts. Produce detailed construction drawings and design packages for utility substation projects. Support design efforts for distribution and transmission voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 230 kV. Assist with the layout and design of 69 kV, 115 kV, 138 kV, and 230 kV substations. Create drawings for switchyards, bus configurations, and equipment placement. Develop foundation layouts, conduit plans, and grounding systems. Coordinate with engineers, protection & controls teams, and project managers to ensure design accuracy. Review and incorporate utility standards and specifications into project designs. Support updates to existing substations including equipment replacements, expansions, and modernization projects.
Typical projects include greenfield substation design, substation expansions and upgrades, transformer installations and replacements, breaker replacements and relay upgrades, switchyard and bus modifications, and protection & control upgrades.
