Design Technician (Utility Design – AutoCAD)

Contract-to-hire | Hybrid | Saint Paul, MN

Pay: $20.00–$23.00/hr

Start (or grow) your career in utility design with a team that supports critical infrastructure. You'll use AutoCAD to produce constructible designs for overhead and underground electric projects—plus learn permitting, easements, and field validation along the way.

What You'll Do

1. Draft and update utility design drawings using AutoCAD (overhead + underground electric).
2. Perform basic engineering/math & measurement calculations to support design decisions.
3. Validate easements/right-of-way and support design/construction cost estimates.
4. Build and process permit packages (plans, exhibits, documentation).
5. Conduct field surveys/inspections of overhead and underground lines (about 20% field time).
6. Review GIS Smallworld for updates and potential design conflicts.
7. Coordinate across departments to keep projects on schedule and customers informed.
8. Apply safety rules, design standards, and regulations in daily work.
9. Interpret and work from electronic pole diagrams.

What We're Looking For

Required

• Proficiency in AutoCAD
• Ability to pass a math/measurement assessment
• Strong organization skills (you'll manage multiple projects)

Preferred

• Associate's degree in Design, Drafting, Engineering, or similar
• Previous CAD experience (internship/coursework welcome)
• Familiarity with GIS Smallworld (or other GIS tools)

• Hybrid role based in Saint Paul, MN
• Roughly 80% office/remote and 20% field work

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
