Instructional Designer I - Safety

Mortenson is currently seeking an Instructional Designer I - Safety that will be responsible for designing and developing online, instructor-led, and virtual courses to help team members successfully perform in role while driving business results. A key focus is collaborating closely with Mortenson's Safety Team to create impactful safety learning programs that align with organizational goals and compliance standards.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Safety Business Service Group and subject matter experts to design courses that meet business and learner requirements.
  • Design learning solutions specifically for frontline, non-desk team members, using mobile-first, field-ready formats that can be accessed on jobsites and in low-bandwidth environments.
  • Embed safety learning into daily work moments (e.g., toolbox talks, pre-task planning, job hazard analysis, and supervisor-led discussions).
  • Design safety learning that drives observable behavior change in the field, not just completion or compliance.
  • Apply instructional design skills to a variety of safety learning projects, ensuring engaging and effective experiences.
  • Write design documents and course materials such as storyboards and instructor-led training guides using creative solutions for effective learning.
  • Ensure learning materials are accessible and usable for diverse frontline audiences, including varying literacy levels, languages, and learning preferences.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of safety learning approaches based on field feedback, data, and evolving risk profiles.
  • Manage course development projects including timeline, resources, and budget.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years' experience in instructional design, adult learning theory, and technical writing or relevant experience.
  • Experience leading instructional design or learning solution development in a corporate, enterprise-scale environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Articulate Storyline and graphic design software preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work with various personalities and work styles.
  • Ability to build strong partnerships with Safety Business Service Group and other stakeholders.
  • Shown ability to work independently and value a collaborative and team-oriented culture.
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Strong writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines and produce high-quality work.
  • Active listening skills and openness to diverse input and feedback.
  • Ability to travel approximately 15%.

The base pay range for this role is $68,700 - $92,800. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%). This position is eligible for Mortenson's incentive plan. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
