Mechanical Designer

The Mechanical Designer collaborates closely with engineers to understand project requirements and create accurate two-dimensional and three-dimensional renderings. This role prepares detailed layouts and drawings from sketches, notes, and blueprints, while using CAD and manufacturing systems to support product development. The Mechanical Designer contributes to continuous improvement by meeting deadlines, maintaining high attention to detail, and proactively seeking ways to add value to projects and departmental goals.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers to gain a clear understanding of project scope and technical requirements.
  • Prepare working layouts and detailed mechanical drawings using precise dimensions derived from sketches, notes, and blueprints.
  • Create both two-dimensional and three-dimensional renderings using automated computer-assisted drafting software.
  • Use the MRP system to look up existing parts, load new part numbers, and enter part orders accurately.
  • Present completed drafts and design concepts to engineering personnel for review and approval.
  • Incorporate feedback and make necessary changes or revisions to drawings and renderings based on engineering input.
  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail to ensure drawings and documentation are accurate and complete.
  • Meet project deadlines by organizing workload, prioritizing tasks, and managing time effectively.
  • Support departmental and organizational goals by accepting ownership of new and different requests.
  • Identify and explore opportunities to improve design processes and add value to project outcomes.

Essential Skills

  • Experience in mechanical design and drafting, preferably within a manufacturing environment.
  • 1+ years of experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proficiency with design software, including computer-assisted drafting tools for 2D and 3D modeling.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing software used to support production and part management.
  • Ability to work with spreadsheet software for data organization and reporting.
  • Proficiency with word processing software for documentation and communication.
  • Strong mechanical engineering and mechanical design fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches, notes, and blueprints with high accuracy.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing precise, high-quality drawings.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and respond constructively to feedback.
  • Time management skills to consistently meet project deadlines.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • A two-year technical degree is preferred.
  • Experience using SolidWorks or similar mechanical design software.
  • Familiarity with MRP systems for part lookup, part number creation, and order entry.
  • Demonstrated initiative in taking ownership of tasks and exploring opportunities to improve processes.
  • Ability to adapt to new requests and changing project requirements while maintaining quality standards.

Work Environment

This role operates in a manufacturing-focused engineering environment that relies on design software, manufacturing software, MRP systems, spreadsheet tools, and word processing applications. The Mechanical Designer works closely with engineering personnel and other technical staff, frequently interacting to review and refine designs. Work is primarily computer-based, using automated CAD tools to produce 2D and 3D mechanical drawings and renderings. The position involves managing multiple projects and deadlines in a structured, process-driven setting where attention to detail, accuracy, and collaboration are highly valued.

This is a Permanent position based out of Jackson, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $40.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms.
