Technical Designer III - Civic & Justice

NELSON is seeking a Technical Designer III to join the Civic & Justice Practice. The Technical Designer II is responsible for developing, organizing, and executing the development of construction documents utilizing creativity, foresight, and judgment to meet project requirements and objectives through project completion.

Experience in Civic & Justice architecture/design is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate has experience working on projects such as: courthouses, town halls, city halls, police and fire stations, correctional facilities, jails, prisons, detention centers, municipality buildings, public works/public safety buildings, etc.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Support the Project Manager in establishing project goals and objectives including workplan, schedule, budget parameters.
  • Lead, facilitate and manage the overall design process for moderately complex projects independently and support larger complex projects under supervision.
  • Contribute to developing fee proposals.
  • Develop innovative design concepts which are practical, aesthetic, safe and conducive to intended purposes and function which is reflective of client goals and within project budget.
  • Selection and specification of materials, products, and architectural systems.
  • Participate in maintaining positive client relationships throughout project.
  • Assist Project Manager in sub-contracting or the coordination of sub-consultant’s work.
  • Serve as team lead in keeping the project, or a phase of a project, on schedule in conjunction with Project Manager
  • Responsible for communication and coordination of other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to ensure incorporation of all information into project requirements and provides support as necessary.
  • Lead the Construction Administration phase responding to RFI's, CO's, reviewing shop drawings and involved in the field site reviews.
  • Ensure project documentation is compliant with NELSON standard for all projects and processes.
  • May assist with negotiating fees and sub-contracts.
  • Develops solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.
  • Prepares 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings.
  • Provide research and compile data during project phases.
  • Prepare and modify interior architectural documents, elevations, sections, details, etc.
  • Supports the team in collecting information for client assessment; may attend interviews, provide documentation support.
  • Conduct design charrettes and lead project team meetings
  • Complete timesheet and expense reports accurately and on-time

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of design, trends, construction methodology, materials application and manufacturer-supplier appropriateness; consistently share such knowledge with teammates
  • Advanced knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
  • Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixture and equipment (FF&E), architectural/interior finishes, lighting, art signage, color and materials to carry out design intent
  • Advanced knowledge of sustainability, integrated design and LEED guidelines
  • Extreme proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD/Architectural Desktop is required
  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup, and InDesign graphic software preferred
  • Basic proficiency in 3D Modeling software such as 3D Studio Max and Viz 2006 preferred
  • Basic proficiency in Deltek Vision Vantage Point
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks as needed to complete within the identified time frame and/or deadline
  • Ability to prioritize and effectively meet deadlines and provide high quality service to clients

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Architectural Drafting, or related field
  • 8+ years' experience working in the field of Architecture
  • Highly proficient in both Revit and AutoCAD
  • Familiarity with Photoshop and/or InDesign preferred
  • Must be deadline-oriented
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Architecture/Design experience working on Civic & Justice buildings, such as: courthouses, town halls, city halls, police and fire stations, correctional facilities, jails, prisons, detention centers, municipality buildings, public works/public safety buildings, etc.

National salary range (regional cost of living, years of relevant experience, certifications, etc. are considered into the hiring process): $65,000 – $100,000; contingent upon relevant experience. Additional compensation includes bonuses and benefits. Bonuses can include but are not limited to: Long Term Incentive Plan, Short Term Incentive Plan, Profit Sharing
