Scopely

A mobile-first game developer and publisher known for titles like "Star Trek Fleet Command" and "MARVEL Strike Force."

Director Of System Design

We are looking for a Director Of System Design in the US or Canada or hybrid in the Culver City office to join our team developing an unannounced and groundbreaking new title with a popular IP. Our game is F2P (mobile + PC) and approaching pre-production.

At Scopely, we care deeply about what we do and want to inspire play, every day - whether in our work environments alongside our talented colleagues, or through our deep connections with our communities of players. We are a global team of game lovers who are developing, publishing and innovating the gaming industry, connecting millions of people around the world daily.

What You'll Do

  • Design and own core systems, including progression, rewards, economies, and metagame structures, to support long-term engagement and monetization.
  • Collaborate deeply with design, product, engineering, and analytics teams to craft systems that balance gameplay integrity with business impact.
  • Help frame the pillars, razors, and design philosophies that will direct system-level decisions.
  • Evaluate system proposals with a critical and constructive eye — identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for iteration.
  • Guide ideation and iteration with both high-level vision and hands-on contribution— writing, reviewing, and improving design documentation with clarity and rigor.
  • Ensure systems are intuitive, scalable, and future-proof across mobile and PC platforms, with a live-service mindset and content extensibility built in.
  • Synthesize the competitive landscape and industry trends to inform best-in-class design decisions and discover innovation opportunities.
  • Partner with leadership to define how the game evolves into a social, cross-platform, mobile-first live service.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging tools and methodologies—especially AI—to explore how they can enhance design workflows and player experiences.
  • Help build and nurture a culture of design excellence, elevating standards, mentoring designers, and contributing to Scopely's reputation as a best-in-class F2P studio.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience designing systems for live service games, ideally F2P
  • Deep expertise in game systems and economies, with a strong grasp of player psychology, behavioral patterns, and progression design.
  • A strategic, player-focused mindset, with an eye for balancing creative vision, gameplay depth, and business goals.
  • Excellent analytical thinking, quantitative reasoning, and problem-solving ability—combined with a clear understanding of the limits of data.
  • Outstanding communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to align diverse stakeholders, influence across functions, and bring our team together.
  • Experience with licensed IP is a plus.
  • A passion for games, a deep understanding of what makes them work
  • The ability to work closely with engineering and data science teams to instrument and analyze systems effectively.
  • A growth mindset grounded in high achievement and low ego.
  • Experience defining systems in pre-production
