Technical Director Level Design

Ubisoft is a global leader in video gaming, with teams spread across the world creating original and memorable gaming experiences, from Assassin's Creed to Rainbow Six, Just Dance, and many more. We believe that diversity of viewpoints advances both players and teams. If you are passionate about innovation and want to push the boundaries of entertainment, join our adventure and help us create the unknown!

We are currently developing a new unannounced project, led by a senior team and still in the concept phase.

To lay the technical foundations of Level Design from the first iterations, we are looking for a Technical Director - Level Design.

This is a key role in the project, combining technical vision, prototyping, and daily collaboration with design teams.

You will join the team at a time when everything is being built, tested, and adjusted.

Your Role

As a Technical Director - Level Design, you are responsible for the technical direction of Level Design on the project.

You play an essential role in the design and optimization of technical tools and processes related to Level Design.

  • Define and evolve the technical direction of Level Design on the project;
  • Design and implement Level Design pipelines and workflows in collaboration with technical and creative teams;
  • Be a technical reference promoting fluid communication between design, programming, art, and production;
  • Tool the design teams with technical solutions adapted to their uses (editor tools, scripts, data, debug);
  • Prototype directly in the engine (UE5) to test and validate design intentions;
  • Accompany the project teams on technical topics related to Level Design and World Building;
  • Contribute to the technical documentation of tools and pipelines.

Your Work Environment

  • A small team based in Montpellier, composed of experienced profiles;
  • A project in the concept phase, leaving ample room for initiative and experimentation;
  • A context favoring collaboration, prototyping, and iteration.

What We Are Looking For

Your Expertise

  • Proven experience in Technical Level Design or equivalent role;
  • Very good mastery of a modern game engine, ideally Unreal Engine;
  • Solid understanding of production pipelines and management of data related to Level Design;
  • Good knowledge of the technical and artistic constraints of game content;
  • Sensitivity to the issues of performance, stability, and optimization;
  • Ability to produce clear and accessible technical documentation.

Your Approach

  • You are autonomous, rigorous, and take responsibility for your subjects;
  • You enjoy hands-on work and prototyping;
  • You willingly share your knowledge and encourage cooperation within the team;
  • You know how to give and receive feedback with your peers.

What Will Make The Difference

  • Your attention to tools and workflows designed for designers;
  • Your ability to link design, technique, and production constraints;
  • Your ability to structure without rigidifying, especially in the concept phase.

Our recruitment process:

  • Review of your application: our team will review it carefully.
  • Quick prequalification (30 min max by phone): if your profile matches, you will have a first phone exchange to validate certain points.
  • Interview 1: Discovery (1h, via video): an exchange with a member of the recruitment team to get to know you better and verify the adequacy of your background with our expectations.
  • Interview 2: Technical (1h, via video): a discussion with two members of the team, more oriented towards the technical, to get into the specifics and speak the same language.

A technical test phase may be planned to better understand your way of working and technical sensitivity.

Joining Ubisoft Montpellier means having access from day one to:

  • Flexibility in your hours and the possibility to work remotely under the conditions provided for by the Ubisoft charter.
  • 20 days of remote work per year from an EU country (reserved for European citizenship profiles);
  • Reimbursement of your travel expenses at 50% or a mileage allowance if you use a bicycle as a mode of transport;
  • Our game library where you can borrow the latest Ubisoft games, those of the competition, and consoles;
  • Our CSE and its preferential rates on a wide range of shows, cinemas, concerts, gyms, amusement parks, and many other good deals.

As an employer, Ubisoft offers the same opportunities to all without distinction of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, social status, disability, and age. Ubisoft works to develop an inclusive work environment that reflects the diversity of its community of players in its teams.

Ubisoft is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint and mobilize its communities as part of its Play Green commitment.
