Summary & Qualifications:
This adjunct faculty member is responsible for teaching in the Communications Academic Area, preparing and delivering instruction to students working on the college student-run newspaper, The White Pine Press. Primary duties include assisting in the recruitment and selection of the design staff; providing guidance and feedback on all design aspects of each issue, including ad design, photo selection, informational graphics, page layout, and overall readability; and striving to provide a positive learning environment for all staff members. This individual works closely with the faculty editorial adviser to the newspaper. Approximate hours per issue: 7-10 hours (including evenings) over 2-3 days of production of each issue.
Education, Experience, Certificates, Licenses and/or Registrations:
Required:
Associate's degree in Graphic Arts or closely related field
Thorough working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop digital image editing software
Thorough working knowledge of Adobe InDesign desktop publishing software
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Graphic Arts or closely related field
One year of college-level teaching experience in the subject area
One year of professional experience in the area of graphic arts
One year of professional experience in the area of journalism
Essential Responsibilities
Specifically, the White Pine Press Design Adviser has these responsibilities:
Appoints the Production Manager. In the appointment of the Production Manager, the adviser seeks input from the Faculty Adviser, and, if possible, the previous year's Production Manager, and the returning staff members.
Assists the Faculty Adviser in the recruitment and selection of the Production staff.
Strives to provide a positive learning environment for all staff members.
Coaches students, upon request, in the improvement of their design and computer skills.
Provides guidance in all design aspects, but may not dictate design /graphics decisions and thereby restrict the students' First Amendment rights.
Oversees production as needed.
Counsels the staff in legal matters. If the design editor and/or Editorial Board chooses to reject such counsel, the Design and Production Adviser notifies in writing the Vice President for Educational Services or his/her designee that counsel has been given and rejected, knowing that legal precedence holds the editor responsible for any infringement of the law, i.e., libel, invasion of privacy, obscenity, etc.
Provides feedback on design, graphics, etc., after each issue.
Monitors disbursement of funds.
Serves as a member of the Editorial Board.
Has the authority to replace the Production Manager or Staff Designers, with establishment of due cause as defined by the NMC Student Code of Conduct and professional journalistic standards as defined by the Associated Collegiate Press's Student Journalists Code of Ethics in consultation with the Faculty Adviser and the Editorial Board. The VP of Student Services may be consulted on due cause.
Encourages the staff to produce a publication that is
