Design Coordinator

AECOM is seeking a Design Coordinator with a strong project management background to be based in our Baltimore, MD office to support the B&P Tunnel Replacement (BPTR) Program, among other project opportunities available at AECOM.

AECOM is the delivery partner for Amtrak on the BPTR Program that will upgrade a ten-mile section of the Northeast Corridor (NEC), America's busiest passenger rail line. The program will also include delivery of new roadway and railroad bridges, new rail systems and track, and a new ADA-accessible West Baltimore MARC station. The delivery partner team is responsible for supporting Amtrak with overseeing the full breadth of the program. The scope of services includes program management, design oversight, construction oversight, commissioning oversight, program controls, and commercial and capacity building.

The Design Coordinator serves as the primary liaison between the construction oversight team and the design oversight team for the tunnel package. This position requires a strong project-management mindset, hands-on experience in both design and construction, and the ability to drive collaborative solutions in a fast-paced megaproject environment. The Design Coordinator supports the Design Oversight Lead in managing design reviews, RFIs, field change evaluations, and stakeholder approvals, ensuring that design intent is maintained throughout procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover.

The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate all design activities for the tunnel package on behalf of the Project Owner, ensuring alignment with program scope, technical standards, interfaces, and Amtrak requirements
  • Serve as the day-to-day point of contact between construction oversight, design oversight, Contractor, and the Engineer of Record (EOR), ensuring timely communication and issue resolution
  • Maintain a hands-on presence with field teams to understand construction constraints
  • Manage the design schedule, deliverable tracking, and progress reporting for the package; identify delays, evaluate root causes, and support recovery planning
  • Monitor design progress against milestones and contractual obligations, escalating risks to the Design Oversight Lead as needed
  • Monitor design development for compliance with Owner Requirements, contract documents, applicable codes, rail/tunnel standards, and contract obligations
  • Support quality assurance by verifying that design submissions meet required format, completeness, and review protocols
  • Facilitate resolution of RFIs, design clarifications, changes, and technical queries in coordination with the Design Oversight Lead and Engineer of Record (EOR)
  • Review and evaluate the EOR's technical responses for impacts to scope, schedule, cost, constructability, and safety
  • Oversee interface coordination with adjacent packages, ensuring timely exchange of data, and design assumptions
  • Coordinate inputs to risk registers, design-related risks, mitigation actions, and impacts to cost/schedule
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary technical reviews, workshops, and design assurance checkpoints with Owner engineering teams
  • Provide package-level design support during procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover to ensure continuity and adherence to design intent
  • Interface with the contractor and other stakeholders, as required, to gather additional details
  • Attend technical project working group meetings as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned
