Accessibility Specialist - A&S Learning Design & Technology

A&S Learning Design & Technology (LDT) is a faculty support unit facilitating the teaching and learning priorities of the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. We support instruction through faculty consultations, communities, and incubation of special projects. We promote active, accessible, and inclusive approaches to teaching and learning. We facilitate access to specialized learning spaces. We explore emerging learning technology and its application in teaching and learning. The Accessibility Specialist will play a critical role in advancing accessibility across the College of Graduate Arts & Sciences (CGAS). This position will develop, implement, and assess efforts to ensure digital and physical accessibility for all CGAS stakeholders. The Specialist will apply technical and subject matter expertise to support digital accessibility among faculty and staff, lead change management, ensure accessible event production and assistive technology platforms, and promote an access-driven work environment. This role will be both proactive and responsive to evolving needs of CGAS, and will evolve accordingly.

Responsibilities

  • With CGAS and University partners, develop and implement strategies to ensure digital accessibility across CGAS platforms and services.
  • Recommend effective practices to promote accessible content development.
  • Document CGAS efforts toward Digital Accessibility improvement and compliance.

Change Management

  • Lead change management efforts to embed accessibility into CGAS culture and workflows.
  • Collaborate with CGAS stakeholders to promote awareness and understanding of accessibility initiatives.
  • Design and deliver relevant training programs for faculty, staff, and students.

Accessible Meetings, Events, and Platforms

  • Ensure internal meetings and events are accessible to all participants.
  • Provide guidance on accessible event planning, including captioning, interpretation, materials, and standardized design and setup of digital and physical meeting spaces.
  • Manage and maintain technology platforms supporting space accessibility.

Access-Driven Work Environment

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify and remove barriers to access.
  • Stay current with emerging trends, technologies, and legislation related to accessibility.

Student Worker Management

  • Hire, train, and supervise student workers supporting accessibility initiatives.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree. Experience: At least four years of relevant experience.

  • Change Management: demonstrated experience in developing and implementing change processes, stakeholder engagement, and change evaluation.
  • Adaptability: ability to thrive in an ever-evolving environment and respond effectively to changing priorities.

  • Communication: excellent interpersonal skills and commitment to maintaining clear lines of communication.
  • Self-Efficacy: demonstrated ability to manage projects and coordinate with teams.
  • Technical knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript in relation to accessibility compliance.
  • Accessibility: Strong understanding of accessibility standards and practices, and/or demonstrated willingness and strong ability to upskill rapidly.
  • Proficiency in common workplace & instructional technologies and accessibility testing tools.

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. The anticipated hiring range is $80,000-90,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits. This position is based in Charlottesville, VA, and is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days on Grounds per week, with additional on-site presence as needed, in accordance with UVA's remote work guidelines.
